Junior Iron Chef, hosted by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Greater Kansas City Chapter (AAFA-KC), is a metro-wide competition that gives children an opportunity to experience healthy eating through the preparation and cooking of nutritious foods, highlighting food allergies. In this competition, teams of middle or high school students are invited to create delicious and creative dishes using healthy ingredients. Recipes should be replicable and will have a chance to be featured in the 2012 Junior Iron Chef Cook Book. Three awards will be given in each age group: Best in Show, Most Creative and Best Food Allergy Recipe. Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13000659405423606775noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1220153422899281463.post-21757123806506146922011-08-22T08:42:00.000-07:002011-08-22T08:42:54.829-07:00Stay VigilantIt is so hard to tote an Epipen around 24/7 isn't it? Especially when your child hasn't had a reaction in several years. But it is crucial to have it when an accident happens. The recent deaths of young people from food allergies serves as a somber reminder. IN EACH CASE, THEY DID NOT HAVE ONE. I also get tired of facing people who think my vigilance in petty. This is why I find sharing stories so important because it keeps me focused on why I have to work hard and stay focused. The story of the young girl in Chicago breaks my heart, scares me, and at the same time, stirs me into action. These stories serve to remind and to reassure that the actions taken by parents and loved ones of children with life-threatening allergies are not without warrant. We have to stay vigilant no matter how silly others try to make us feel. I am also grateful that I have my food allergy friends who understand and share my feelings. Whether we meet face to face or simply e-mail periodically, just knowing you are out there keeps me strong.Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13000659405423606775noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1220153422899281463.post-86860626113000709372010-10-01T11:01:00.000-07:002010-10-01T11:04:36.529-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiJUHFMmx1X0EHwM7KMcbrxlXLyhGWe3Sfix6oFYg4lmxT-uHjLga197R0w4n6UydGf_S8X9d1m0tOKo4gVyfaVsbpxm1gTm0bmU6NtFATywaHDOqRz73ZBjCXu5Jj-McJ2wTqmOUjWyp4/s320/IMG00196.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523140073383066306" />Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13000659405423606775noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1220153422899281463.post-50034496864598407782010-09-26T08:25:00.000-07:002010-09-26T08:26:49.146-07:00Food Allergy GoblinAs Halloween approaches I am once again grateful for learning about the "Peanut Goblin" and wanted to share this idea with everyone who is new to trick-or-treating with a food allergy. You may have the "Milk Goblin" or the "Soy Goblin" come to your house depending on your child's allergy. At our house the "Peanut Goblin" is a creature that LOVES peanut-containing treats and candy and if you leave him some, he'll leave you a present in exchange.

We let my daughter and her little sister trick-or-treat with their friends and when we get home, we dump their candy out and toss all those containing peanuts inside the "Peanut Goblins" bag. They then place the bag on the front door step just before bed. In the morning, the bag of candy has been replaced with a present for each girl.

It is so much fun! It definitely takes the sting out of taking candy away.

Last year we went to an event where a beautiful chocolate candy containing peanuts was passed out. Instead of getting upset, my daughter said, "Wow, the Peanut Goblin is going to love this one!"

I wish each of you and your families a happy and safe Halloween.

~ JennyJennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13000659405423606775noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1220153422899281463.post-9803875217429631772010-05-20T15:40:00.000-07:002010-05-20T15:47:10.954-07:00Food Allergy Walk in KC!The FAAN Walk for Food Allergy - Moving Toward a Cure is a 2 mile walk taking place September 25th at the Mid-America Sports Complex, Baseball Fields Parking Lot, 20000 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS. I get e-mails daily about camps, surveys, trainings, research, new books, new legislation, etc. It is fantastic to see that the community is really getting connected. We need to get Kansas City food allergy folks connected somehow so we can have a much larger voice -- that would be AWESOME!

I've also been contacted by several newly diagnosed familes who are interested in talking to us and plan to come to our gatherings. See you soon.Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13000659405423606775noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1220153422899281463.post-83363967830680250302009-03-31T08:57:00.000-07:002009-03-31T09:05:12.671-07:00In The NewsA reporter for the St. Joseph Press called last week and asked me some questions about living with food allergies for an article she was writting. The article was published today: http://www.stjoenews.net/news/2009/mar/31/allergies-change-everything/?diem

Also, Avery received her "Food Allergy News for Kids" last night and her picture and comments were included. She is very excited to show her friends at school. FAAN doesn't include the Newsletter on their Website so I took a picture of it.Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13000659405423606775noreply@blogger.com
